Kundali Milan

Guna Milan & Ashtakoot Matching

Two charts, eight factors, one score out of 36. That's what your family means by “check the Kundali first.”

Before two people marry, Vedic astrology compares their charts. Not for a yes/no verdict, but to see where they naturally align and where they'll need to work at it: temperament, mental wavelength, physical compatibility, family prosperity, all of it read from where the Moon sat in each chart at birth. That's Kundali Milan, also called Kundli Matching, Guna Milan or Horoscope Matching.

Ashtakoot Milan is the method almost everyone uses: eight factors, 36 points total. A high score looks good on paper, but it's not the whole story. Which specific koots are weak, and whether Nadi, Bhakoot or Mangal Dosha shows up, can matter more than the number itself.

The Ashtakoot: 8 Factors, 36 Guna

1
Varna
Spiritual compatibility and ego alignment between the two natures.
2
Vashya
Mutual influence and control: who tends to lead, who adapts.
3
Tara
Birth-star compatibility, read for well-being and health.
4
Yoni
Physical compatibility, from each Nakshatra’s symbolic animal.
5
Graha Maitri
Mental compatibility, from the two Moon-sign lords’ friendship.
6
Gana
Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa natures.
7
Bhakoot
Emotional bond and long-term prosperity between the two Rashis.
8
Nadi
Genetic and health compatibility, and outlook for healthy children.

Reading Your Guna Score

<18
18-24
25-32
32+

Treat these as a guideline, not a cutoff. A 22 with no dosha can be steadier than a 30 carrying a serious Nadi Dosha.

The Three Doshas Everyone Asks About

Nadi Dosha

Both charts share the same Nadi, the heaviest-weighted factor in the whole system. It’s cancelled more often than assumed: a different Rashi or Rashi-lord clears it. Don’t panic off the label; get the actual charts checked.

Bhakoot Dosha

Rashi-to-Rashi distance, read for the couple’s long-term finances and family harmony, not the relationship itself. Several classical exceptions cancel it depending on the ruling planets.

Mangal Dosha (Manglik)

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is what makes someone Manglik. It cancels outright when both partners are Manglik, plus a handful of other classical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Gunas are considered good for marriage?+

Below 18, most astrologers would tell you to think twice. 18–24 is workable, often with a remedy or two. 25–32 is genuinely good. 32+ and you're in excellent-match territory. But the number is only half the story: which Kootas scored low matters as much as the total.

Is 18 Guna enough for marriage?+

It's the traditional cutoff, not a green light by itself. Plenty of families go ahead at 18–24 once an astrologer has confirmed there's no serious Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha hiding behind that number. The score alone won't tell you that.

What happens if Nadi Dosha is present?+

It gets flagged as a concern for health and children, since it's the heaviest-weighted factor in the whole system. But it's cancelled more often than people expect: different Rashi, different Rashi-lord, or a remedial puja can clear it. Get the actual charts checked before assuming the worst.

Does Mangal Dosha (Manglik) always block a marriage?+

No, and this is where a lot of families overreact. It cancels in several well-documented situations, and both partners being Manglik is the big one. "Manglik" isn't a yes/no label; it's a specific Mars placement that needs an actual reading.

Is Kundali Milan only about the 36 Gunas?+

Ashtakoot is the method everyone reaches for first, but a real reading goes further: Mangal Dosha, Nadi Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, and how strong each chart is on its own. The score gets you in the door. It's not the whole conversation.
