Janma Kundali

Your Vedic Birth Chart, Explained

The sky, frozen at the exact moment you were born: that's a Kundali. Lagna, Rashi, Nakshatra, where every planet sat, which house they landed in.

Everyone's read a horoscope column written for “all Leos” or “all Cancers.” A Kundali isn't that. It's your own chart: Sun, Moon and the other seven grahas, mapped across the twelve houses at the exact minute you arrived. Once it exists, it feeds everything else: personality, career and health timing, marriage matching, and the dasha periods that shape which chapter of life you're actually in.

You'll also see it written as Kundli, Janam Kundali or Janma Patrika, same thing. And because it's calculated for your exact birth moment rather than a whole sign, getting the time right is what separates a useful reading from a generic one.

The Six Building Blocks of a Kundali

1
Lagna (Ascendant)
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment: the reference point every other placement in the chart is read from.
2
Rashi (Moon Sign)
The zodiac sign your Moon occupied at birth. This is your "chandra rashi", the sign used for daily Rashifal predictions.
3
Nakshatra
One of 27 lunar mansions the Moon was passing through at birth, each with its own ruling planet and character, offering finer detail than the Rashi alone.
4
Graha Placement
Where each of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) sat across the twelve houses at your birth.
5
Bhava (Houses)
The twelve life-areas: self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, and so on, each ruled by the sign and planets placed there.
6
Dasha
The Vimshottari sequence of planetary periods that runs through your whole life, showing which graha’s influence is active now and what tends to unfold under it.

Why Exact Birth Time Matters

The Lagna changes roughly once every two hours, and every house in your chart counts off from it. So a birth time that's off by 15-20 minutes (which happens more than you'd think) can be enough to flip which house a planet falls in, or which Nakshatra pada the Moon was actually in.

An approximate time still gets you a useful broad reading. But for anything precise, like exact dasha timing, house-level predictions, or a Kundali Milan match, dig out the birth certificate or hospital record first. It's worth the five minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kundali?+

It's a map of where the Sun, Moon and every other planet sat in the sky at your exact birth moment, arranged into the twelve houses of Vedic astrology. Once you have it, everything else builds on it: matching, dasha predictions, doshas, remedies, all of it.

What do I need to generate an accurate Kundali?+

Date of birth, place of birth, and the most exact time you can find. Time is the sensitive one: the Lagna shifts roughly one sign every two hours, so a few minutes' difference genuinely changes the chart.

What is the difference between Rashi and Nakshatra?+

Rashi is one of 12 zodiac signs, 30 degrees each. Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, about 13°20' each, a much finer slice. Two people can share a Moon Rashi and still land in different Nakshatras, which is exactly why Kundali Milan checks Nakshatra, not just Rashi.

What is Navamsa (D9) and why does it matter?+

It's a second chart (D9), built by splitting each sign into nine parts. This is where marriage and partnership actually get read, and it's also how you check whether a planet that looks strong or weak in the main chart really is. A proper reading never looks at just one chart.

How is Kundali different from Kundali Milan?+

A Kundali is about you: your own chart, your career, health, timing. Kundali Milan puts two charts side by side to check marriage compatibility. Different question, different page, see our Kundali Milan guide for that one.
